FINALIST OF THE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN COMPOSITION 2009
Composer's Biography
Alain Chiu
Award-winning composer Alain Chiu's music has been performed in concert halls and festivals through out the world, including frequent performances in the USA, Hong Kong, Portugal and most recently, in Greece. Mr. Chiu's music displays a kaleidoscope of influences from Takemitsu, Cage, Ades and Bach to mainstream music like King Crimson, the Beatles, Steven Stapleton and Bill Evans; resulting in what he calls an ‘urban existentialist’ approach to classical music. Alain Chiu has received commissions by many musicians and groups. His piece ‘Under the Twinkle of a Fading Star,’ commissioned by Louis Siu and the Afiara Quartet is one of the first pieces ever written for the new tenor timpani. Mr. Chiu has also written for various unconventional media including ‘In a Silent Sense,’ a major work for amplified piano and Tibetan percussion instruments. His music has been performed by the Ives Quartet, the Afiara Quartet among many fine musicians. Mr. Chiu received his Bachelor of Music degree in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Samuel Clarke Scholarship, where he studies with Conrad Susa, David Garner and electronic music with Alden Jenks. In the summer of 2008, Mr. Chiu received a scholarship to study at the European American Musical Alliance in Paris directed by Dr. Philip Lasser: an active advocate of the legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. His former teachers have included James Boznos, Cui Shi-Guang and Lane Harder. He has attended masterclasses by Sofia Gubaidulina, John Adams, Terry Riley, Frederick Rzewski and the Ives Quartet among others. Alain Chiu is currently working on several exciting projects and commissions, including a Nonet in which he attempts to capture the essence of his hometown-Hong Kong, in music.
